Deploying CONTENTdm Software, Connexion, Discovery for a consortium of libraries under the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences
The Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences has a system of libraries including 01 general library and 30 specialized libraries of 32 research institutes and affiliated units. In particular, the Library of Social Sciences is a multi-disciplinary library managed by the Institute of Social Sciences Information and is the head of the library system of the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences. With the number of such libraries and the source of printed materials, the digital documents of each library need to be managed is quite large, this number also keeps increasing year by year. Therefore, how to uniformly manage resources between libraries and serve readers can look up and exploit documents between libraries in the system is an extremely important issue. To solve this problem, the Institute of Social Sciences Information works and coordinates with IDT Company to investigate, analyze the current situation, actual needs and provide appropriate solutions, including:
– Concentrated catalog software Connexion – OCLC: Currently, all libraries are using the same electronic library software to manage printed materials. However, all bibliographic data is not managed in an environment, a unified archive; cataloging and data are not standardized. Therefore, with centralized cataloging software, bibliographic data for all libraries will be uploaded and managed in the WorldCat global federated catalog system, complying with international standards for bibliographic data; It is also possible to share material information with other libraries around the globe.
– COTENTdm digital library software – OCLC: With the characteristics of research institutes and storing a lot of ancient and rare documents, the application of CONTENTdm software allows managing all types of documents. In addition, it is possible to manage Microsoft files such as Word, Powerpoint, Excel; Video, Audio, … With CONTENTdm, libraries can build a central library model – members; in which the Library of Social Science Information Institute is the focal point, implementing the management of the entire system and the remaining libraries will be decentralized specifically to manage and put their data into software . All digital document records are also linked and managed in the WorldCat global federated catalog.
– WorldCat Discovery Services – OCLC: The software allows readers from a single lookup portal to search all printed documents, digital documents of their library, other libraries in the system, even Expand search to other libraries around the world..
All solutions were implemented in 5 months from June 2017 to November 2017 with 2 training sessions focused at the Institute of Social Sciences Information and training sessions at each library. In particular, there is the participation of OCLC experts in the products and services provided in the project; expert in the field of information – library on cataloging documents, digital libraries; and professional staff of IDT Company.
